Artist's Comments

Wonder what kitty dragons feed on. Some friends of mine suggested sparkle-vampires since it's hard to get natural sparkles anywhere else. :3

I like the idea~?

Would be an interesting cat food commercial.

Markers, pencil and watercolour on A3-Mixed Media paper.
All Traditional.

As always: Advanced Crit highly appreciated. But please note that I left some parts without details to keep the drawing clear for those who look at it. ^^

btw... why does that remind me of christmas...?

Critiques

:iconelfwithvampitude:
I cant lie and say I dont like your pieces cause i do. i fav almost everyone that you've posted since i started watching you. i've seen critiques of others and some are good but others arn't really critiques. for those of you who dont know, a critique is meant to tell an artist what he/she can improive on. youi basically pic apart their piece so they can become even better than they are, not just praises. now that ive said that, onto the critique. =^.^=

this piece i like as i do most. the shading and colouring is interesting and the design of the dragon-kitty intrigues me. i dop have to agree a bit about the hand though. the shading doesnt quite match. the bowl is well "sculpted" but i do wonder about its design. the right side doesnt quite match the the left side, but since i am not the artist i dont know if you meant it to be that way. also did you mean for the bottom of the bowl to be lighter than the area closer to the vampyr sparkles? perhaps it should be darker? since its farther away from the light source and therefore would be darker? i like the creativity though of the food.

back to the hands. are they meant to be that way because your humanoid is also part dragon or kitty, because that is how i interpret it. it ties in very well with the picture itself and more specifically with the cat-dragon.

the humanoids body is a bit of a mystery. i kno the cat-dragon is the central object of this piece but if you actually consider the humanoids anatomy there should be something there. there probably is but it just blends a tad too much in with the backround. it looks as if the body dissapears? it kind of looks as if the left leg of the humanoid is a tad small (or atleast in a strange angle) if you know what i mean. since it is closer to us in the pic maybe it should be larger? the only other thing is his/her right foot. the left is fine i think, but it looks like they have (literally) two left feet. because the way i see it is the toe closest to us on that foot is shorter than the rest of the foot and should be longer because it is the big toe right? thats all for the humanoid.

onto my favorite part of this piece. cat-dragon. i do like how you've blended the forms into one, but the body looks a little long and scrawny after the front legs. the body looks considerably broad in the chest area, and then seems to thin down to that teeny rump. it makes me wonder how it holds that larger first half up. my buddy Piff always critiques me and constantly asks, well if that goes there, how does it all work? if the back end is smaller, and the front broader and heavier, then what keeps this little kitty-dragon from falling forward? i have to say though i adore the way his tail looks. the way the fur stands up a bit on the rump and then goes into that curled tail. the other thing, are the toes that of a cat, or dragon? the colouration of the front ones make a person think dragonesque, but then the back ones look more cat-like. is that what you meant to do? either way i think its nice looking. kittys left fron foot..... is at a bit of an odd angle in my opinion. i dont know what it is about it.... but i just think its a bit odd. perhaps you could explain it to me.

i dont have really anything to say about much else execpt that maybe the right wing scales could be defined a little more and that the rest of "kitty" looks quite good. the wing design is very nice too.

lastly i think is shadows, colourin, and backround. the colouring is fine in my opinion. all the colours are soft and work well together. the shadows are a bit light in som places i think, since your only visable light source is the vampyr sparkles. the backround is good too. subtle and unobtrusive to the picture. it takes nothing away yet is visably there and help tie the whole picture together. my only question regards the floor. do vampyr sparkles warp things? or is that sort of a crak in the floorin like in other places cause the left side looks like it curves.....or are they on a more hilled area?

kay thats all. hope i didnt go overboard ^^;

sorry for any mispellings. when i write i get on a roll and don't stop to make corrections

The overall composition of this piece is well balanced, both in the placement of objects (person, dragon-kitty, and bowl), and in use of textures and colors. I like the use of the subtle silver grays of the bowl, its contents, and the dragon-kitty, as contrasted with with the gently warm tones of the floor and the human's arms and hands.

Regarding the implied overhead-light, the shadows are generally well placed. However, given how brightly the contents of the bowl shine, it appears to be a brighter light source than the (relatively far away) overhead-light. Hence, it would seem that the bowl should cast a sharper shadow on the floor near the tip of the human's foot. This would be more consistent with the way you have placed the shadows on the dragon-kitty, as well.

Overall, the human's and dragon-kitty's positions are quite natural and believable. I think perhaps the shading on the human's hands – particularly the one holding the bowl – could have been smoother, given the overall smoothness of the shading in rest of this piece; and the right thumb could have reflected more of the light emitted by the sparkles in the bowl. Also it appears as if that the human's big toe could have been a tiny bit bigger, and maybe the other toes just a tiny bit more defined.

Both the dragon-kitty and bowl are very well executed. Although perhaps the dragon-kitty's right wing might benefit from having its scales a little better defined, you have done an excellent job of making the dragon-kitty three-dimensionally realistic, and your transition from fur to scales is flawless. This is a lovely creature!

I love this.. A LOT!!

Though it seemed rather... odd with a kitty having scales... I know that it's a dragon and stuff. So, I should take that off. But my brain is telling me otherwise.

:shakefist:

The can is sparkly!!

Sparkly vampires? What's that?
