cloud dragons by drachenmagier cloud dragons by drachenmagier
A bit of toying around with acrylics, mostly during Christmas and New Year. (yes, I'm a tad late d: ).

I had my fun, though I really didn't plan the dragons. I wanted a bit of background practice. Yeah, we see how far I got with that.

So, here we are, at the nesting grounds of cloud dragons.

Critiques on technique always greatly appreciated. :)

Great use of line. That's sometimes difficult with acrylics. I also love your composition sensibilities and color palette. Very holistic and well-defined.

The only thing that I might consider as an issue is the fact that one of the smaller dragons near the middle gets a bit lost in the light colors of the right side. But even that works rather well in the piece.

Overall, I really like the piece. Everything from the shape of the picture to the defining lines of the cages contributes to the overall view, and it all works to emphasize the dragons, which are the main feature of the piece, without distracting too much from them.

This reminds me rather heavily of Terry Pratchett's Wyrmberg in "The Colour of Magic." High-up cave, translucent dragons, and bits of metal -- all that's missing is those giant anti-grav rings.

That aside, you have turned out yet another masterpiece, drachenmagier! I'd be critical of your technique if I knew how, but alas, it's 4 AM, I should be getting to bed, and my wits appear to have beaten me there! All I can say is how appreciative I am of your works, sir -- 'tis always a pleasure to see your wretched grin leering out of my deviantwatch! (Such a statement may seem contradictory, I know, but I assure you, I meant the best XD)

Well, a very good night to you, sir -- or a good morning, or afternoon, or whatever else you'd like! Bye!

One day I will have to start reading those books. I often hear that there are similarities between the stories of Terry Pratchett and my drawings. :D And I'm getting more and more curious.

Joke here is more that I literally had no idea what I would be doing. In every aspect: Technique, image and materials. d: Of course it's even a bigger compliment then to hear it came out good.

(hope you got a bit of sleep though. XD And no worries, I did choose that avatar because of the grin after all~! )

How did you make the acrylic look see-through and smokey? c:

Two versions: Either I watered it down a bit or I painted in lighter colors, making it look like it's see through. The smokey parts were mostly watered down, I think. ^^
